Smart Hands Responsible Electronics Disposal (SHRED)

Smart Hands for Responsible Electronic Disposal (SHRED) is a new sustainability-focused service in the Smart Hands catalog. It allows customers to submit self-service requests for the secure and responsible disposal of equipment or gear already located within IBX facilities.

Before you place a SHRED order

To prepare your equipment for disposal:

  • Ensure the equipment is dismounted from the rack or cabinet.
  • Place it in the cage, ready for pickup.
  • Provide the equipment details, including brand, model, serial number, when placing your order.

To remove equipment from a rack or cabinet, submit a Smart Hands Equipment Removal Order. If you are unsure about the equipment details, submit a Smart Hands Audit to gather the necessary information.

Service scope

The SHRED service currently supports offsite equipment disposal. Smart Hands engineers will verify the equipment against the customer-provided inventory list before collecting it. All equipment is securely transported in GPS-tracked trucks with tamper-proof seals directly to the certified processing facility.

To maintain data security:

  • Customers must perform a software wipe of all hard drives or storage media prior to collection.
  • All data-bearing equipment will be degaussed, crushed, shredded, and physically destroyed to ensure complete data sanitization.
  • Remaining equipment will be evaluated for refurbishment or resale. Non-functioning equipment will be dismantled, with usable parts refurbished or remarketed. Any unusable parts will be responsibly recycled, adhering to environmentally and socially responsible practices.
note

Our authorized suppliers meet industry standards, including ISO 9001, 14001, 45001, 27001, and R2v3 certifications. We use the NIST Purge methodology for data sanitization, ensuring data cannot be recovered. Standard shredding sizes are 10 mm for solid-state drives (SSDs) and 20 mm for mechanical hard drives (HDDs), ensuring secure and compliant destruction.

SHRED orders will remain open for up to 90 days by default, with an average completion time of approximately 30 calendar days. Once the disposal process is complete, customers will receive a digital Customer Settlement Report (CSR) via the SHRED order in the Customer Portal. Each CSR document will include the following:

  • Digital Certificate of Destruction/Disposal (COD)
  • Processed Inventory Details
  • Photographic documentation (if available)

Supported equipment types

SHRED supports the following equipment categories:

  • Hard disks and storage media (all drives and media should be wiped by customers before collection by Smart Hands technicians)
  • Servers and storage arrays
  • Network appliances
  • Other serialized equipment (e.g. keyboards, mice, network cards)
  • Other non-serialized equipment (e.g. cables, unmounted cabinets, rack mounts)
note

All equipment categories incur charges based on quantity, while non-serialized equipment is charged by weight.
