Smart Hands Responsible Electronics Disposal (SHRED)
Smart Hands for Responsible Electronic Disposal (SHRED) is a new sustainability-focused offering within the Smart Hands catalog. It enables customers to submit self-service requests for the secure disposal of equipment or gear already located in IBX facilities. Starting with offsite disposal service, the equipment to be disposed of will be accounted and collected. Once the process is complete, a digital Certificate of Destruction (COD) will be issued.
The SHRED program is currently available at over 80 IBXs across 20 major metros (Atlanta, Brisbane, Canberra, Hong Kong, London, Los Angeles, Melbourne, Miami, New York, Paris, Seoul, Singapore, Sydney, Washington DC, and more).
SHRED orders remain open for up to 90 days to allow for service completion. However, the average completion is approximately 30 calendar days. Once the service is complete, a Certificate of Destruction (COD) with a serialized list of processed equipment will be provided through the SHRED order in the Customer Portal.
SHRED supports the following equipment categories:
- Hard disks and storage media (all drives and media are recommended to be wiped by customers prior to collection by Smart Hands technicians)
- Servers and storage arrays
- Network appliances
- Other serialized equipment (e.g. keyboards, mice, network cards)
- Other non-serialized equipment (e.g. cables, unmounted cabinets, rack mounts)
Scope of Work for Equipment Collection and Disposal
For security reasons, all hard drives or storage media should be software wiped by customers prior to the collection by Smart Hands technicians. All equipment included in a single SHRED order will be securely transported to a processing facility. Data-bearing equipment will be degaussed, crushed, shredded, and physically destroyed to ensure complete data sanitization. Remaining equipment will be assessed for potential refurbishment or resale. Non-functioning equipment will be dismantled, and any usable parts will be refurbished or remarketed. Any remaining non-functional parts will be responsibly recycled for materials, following environmentally and socially responsible practices.
Our authorized suppliers adhere to leading industry standards, including ISO 9001, 14001, 45001, 27001, and R2v3 certifications. Data sanitization processing is based on NIST Purge methodology, ensuring that data recovery is rendered infeasible. Standard shredding particle sizes are 10mm for solid-state drives (SSDs) and 20mm for mechanical hard drives (HDDs), supporting secure and compliant destruction.
To order a Responsible Electronic Disposal (SHRED) request
Order SHRED through the Customer Portal. Select Colocation > Smart Hands > Responsible Electronic Disposal
Complete the Responsible Electronic Disposal form.
You will need to know the brand, model, and serial number of the equipment to be disposed. You can use a Smart Hands Audit request to obtain this information if necessary. And if the disposal requires dismounting from the cabinet or rack, use a Smart Hands Remove Equipment request prior to submitting the SHRED request.
Non-serialized equipment will be charged based on weight, while all other equipment categories will be charged per unit. The total SHRED service fee includes labor costs, plus the applicable SHRED unit charges, calculated by the quantity or weight of the submitted equipment.
To proceed with the order submission, you must review and accept all terms and conditions outlined at the end of the SHRED service form.
