Vendor Device Index
Network Edge supports multiple deployment types, connectivity options, license types, and lifecycle management features to help you create and manage virtual devices for each vendor.
Deployment Type
Network Edge offers three virtual device redundancy configurations: Single, Redundant, and Cluster.
-
Single Device - A single, standalone virtual device.
-
Redundant Device - A pair of redundant devices typically deployed in active/active operation. One device is connected to Fabric's Primary Plane and the other device is connected to Fabric's Secondary Plane. The two devices can be provisioned in the same Metro for local redundancy or different Metros for geo-redundancy.
-
Cluster - A cluster of devices in the same Metro typically deployed in an active/standby configuration. Device clusters are only available for select vendors that support active/standby operation with synchronized device configurations. One device is connected to Fabric's Primary Plane and the other device is connected to Fabric's Secondary plane. The cluster is treated as one logical device. Interfaces are associated with the cluster, not the individual devices.
For more information on the primary/secondary planes and cluster redundancy, see Device Resiliency.
Connectivity Options
Network Edge offers two different connectivity options: With an Equinix Public IP Address and Without an Equinix Public IP Address.
-
With Equinix Public IP Address - The virtual device is assigned a public IP address and is accessible from the Internet.
-
Without Equinix Public IP Address - The virtual device is deployed without any public IP address and is not accessible from the Internet. You manage the device from a private network or virtual connection. This may require additional configuration, including the configuration of the private network, WAN or management access, and/or license registration.
Connectivity options vary by vendor and device type, with some supporting only deploying with a public IP address, some support deploying either with or without a public IP address, and a few support only deploying without an IP address.
License Types
There are two license options available for Network Edge virtual devices: Bring Your Own Licenses (BYOL) and Subscription Licenses. Availability of the license type varies by vendor, model, and deployment type.
-
Bring Your Own License (BYOL) - With the BYOL option, you are responsible for purchasing the license and device-level support contract from the respective vendor. Equinix support is limited to virtual device infrastructure and VNF-specific issues need to be supported by VNF vendor through a separate support contract. See Device Configuration Responsibilities for more information.
-
Subscription License - With a subscription license, Equinix provides and bills you for the software license. Equinix provides support for virtual device infrastructure and VNF support varies by vendor.
- For F5 devices, F5 requires a support account to access F5 support directly.
- For VyOS, Equinix offers a package that includes support.
- The Catalyst 8000V Autonomous mode subscription option allows you to troubleshoot Cisco 8000V software or configuration issues with the Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC). Equinix opens a TAC case for you, then you engage with Cisco TAC directly.
