Use Cases

Equinix Internet Access is commonly used for these purposes:

  • Main internet access – Highly scalable and resilient internet connection with dual port access and fixed fee billing. Internet Access provides the main source of internet access for IP transport. Example configuration details:

    • Dual-port
    • 1G port
    • IPv4 and IPv6 Addresses
    • VRRP Static, Equinix-assigned IP Space
    • 500 Mbps commitment
    • Fixed billing

These default selections can be modified to suit your precise needs.

  • Management access – Minimum internet bandwidth established to gain out-of-band management access to your assets in Equinix IBXes. Internet Access provides independent, diverse back-door support for managing servers and network devices. No additional IP addresses are required, and no modifications to the configuration are permitted.

    • Single-port
    • 1G port
    • IPv4 and IPv6 Addresses
    • Direct Routing with Equinix-assigned IP Space
    • Bandwidth commitment – 15 Mbps
    • Fixed billing

Connecting to Internet Access - Fabric

Equinix Internet Access offers Fabric users a layer 2 virtual connection to the Internet where the a-side is your Fabric port.

It supports:

  • Redundancy - Support for single and dual port configurations where both ports are in the same IBX. Single ports support static, direct and BGP routing. Dual port configurations support VRRP Static, VRRP Direct, and BGP routing.
  • Fixed billing account.
  • Symmetrical bandwidth of 10 Mbps - 50 Gbps up to maximum port speed, with a flexible minimum bandwidth commitment.

In addition, Equinix can provide:

  • Internet or WAN-facing IPv4 /30 and IPv6 /64 addresses.
  • Optional additional IPv4 /30 to IPV4 /24, and IPv6 /64 and /48, for customer devices.

Or you can bring and use your own IP address space.

Other advantages of using a Fabric port for Internet Access:

  • Fabric ports can be shared with several different Equinix services on the same port with bandwidth up to 50 Gbps.
  • For customers who aren’t co-located in an IBX data center, remote ports allow use of network service providers (NSPs) with Equinix Fabric to connect from their location to an IBX.

Connecting to Internet Access - Network Edge

Equinix Internet Access offers a layer 2 virtual connection to the Internet where the a-side is your Network Edge virtual device, configured as:

  • An internet on firewall virtual device that gives you possibility to monitor and filter incoming and outgoing network traffic based on your organization's established security policies.

  • A virtual router that provides routing, switching, security, VPN, and other functions through a virtualization platform.

  • A load balancer that is distributing network or application traffic across a number of servers increasing capacity (concurrent users) and reliability of applications.

It supports:

  • Redundancy - Support for Single device, Redundant devices, or Cluster devices. Support for single or dual connections, including a single independent connection for each device in a cluster pair or a redundant pair. End-to-end resilient secondary (redundant) connections are supported for clusters and redundant devices. Supports static, direct, and BGP routing for single device configurations and BGP routing for dual device configurations.
  • Fixed billing account
  • Symmetrical bandwidth of 10 Mbps - 10 Gbps up to maximum port speed, with a flexible minimum bandwidth commitment
