Fabric Skills Plugin

The Equinix Fabric skills plugin installs the Fabric skills and the Fabric MCP server together in one step. Add the marketplace to your client, install the plugin, and log in. You can then ask the client to search your Fabric inventory, create and update connections, manage Fabric Networks, or configure a Fabric Cloud Router.

A skill is an instruction file that tells the client how to carry out a task correctly. The Fabric skills define which filters apply to an inventory search, which details a connection request needs before the client creates it, which values a Fabric Cloud Router package accepts, and which order the steps run in. Without them, a client has the tools but not the procedure. The plugin also carries the Fabric MCP server definition, so you do not configure the server separately.

The plugin is published in the equinix-agent-plugins repository on GitHub. That repository is a plugin marketplace. You add the marketplace once, then install the plugins you want from it.

Public Preview

The Fabric MCP server is in public preview. Tools, descriptions, and response formats may change before general availability.

For feedback, questions, or help with the plugin, email fabric-intelligence-support@equinix.com.

What the Plugin Contains

The marketplace publishes one plugin, equinix-fabric, which contains four skills.

SkillWhat you can ask the client to do
show-fabric-inventorySearch and list connections, ports, Fabric Cloud Routers, service tokens, route filters, route aggregations, and Equinix Precision Time services. Filter by metro, project, state, bandwidth, type, or name.
manage-fabric-connectionCreate, update, and retry Fabric connections, including EVPL, EPL, IP, Internet Access, and EVP-LAN or EP-LAN virtual connections. Validate a connection before you create it, and update its name, bandwidth, or notification email addresses.
manage-fabric-networkPlan, create, look up, compare, and update Fabric Networks of type EVP-LAN, EVP-Tree, EP-LAN, and EP-Tree, including port compatibility checks.
manage-cloud-routerCreate and update Fabric Cloud Routers. Configure BGP for IPv4 and IPv6. Create, attach, and update route filters, route filter rules, route aggregations, and route aggregation rules.

The plugin bundles the Fabric MCP server at https://mcp.equinix.com/fabric and registers it in your client under the name equinix-fabric. For the tools that server exposes and the access level each one needs, see Fabric Tools.

Prerequisites

  • An Equinix Customer Portal account with access to the Fabric resources you want the client to use. The client acts as the user who logs in and inherits that user's permissions.
  • A client that reads plugin marketplaces. Claude Code and Claude Desktop do. For every other client, see Install in Other Clients.
  • Network access to https://mcp.equinix.com and https://github.com.

You do not need an access token. Your client completes a browser login the first time it calls the server. For more information, see Authentication.

Install in Claude Code

  1. Add the marketplace.

    claude plugin marketplace add equinix/equinix-agent-plugins
  2. Install the plugin.

    claude plugin install equinix-fabric@equinix-agent-plugins

    You can also run /plugin in an interactive session and select equinix-fabric from the equinix-agent-plugins marketplace.

  3. Authenticate. Run /mcp, select equinix-fabric, and complete the browser login.

  4. Confirm that the plugin is installed and the server is connected.

    claude plugin list
    claude mcp list

Install in Claude Desktop

  1. Go to Settings > Customize and select Plugins.

  2. Select Add marketplace.

  3. Enter the repository address and confirm.

    https://github.com/equinix/equinix-agent-plugins
  4. Wait for the marketplace to sync. Claude Desktop reads the marketplace index from the repository and lists the plugins it declares. Select Sync on the marketplace entry whenever you want to get new plugins or versions.

  5. Find equinix-fabric in the listing, select Install, and confirm that its toggle is enabled.

  6. Authenticate. Go to Settings > Connectors, find equinix-fabric, and complete the browser login. The skills work only after the server is connected.

  7. Start a new session.

Install for a Team

To give everyone on a project the plugin when they clone the project repository, commit the following to the project's .claude/settings.json file.

{
"extraKnownMarketplaces": {
"equinix-agent-plugins": {
"source": {
"source": "github",
"repo": "equinix/equinix-agent-plugins"
}
}
},
"enabledPlugins": {
"equinix-fabric@equinix-agent-plugins": true
}
}

Each user still logs in individually, and each user's permissions come from their own Equinix account.

Install in Codex

Codex installs the skills from the marketplace. Add the Fabric MCP server separately.

  1. In Codex, go to Plugins > Add > Add marketplace.

  2. Enter the repository address and add the marketplace.

    https://github.com/equinix/equinix-agent-plugins
  3. In your personal space, select equinix-fabric and install it.

  4. Add the Fabric MCP server.

    codex mcp add equinix-fabric --url https://mcp.equinix.com/fabric
  5. Start a new session and complete the browser login when Codex calls the server for the first time.

Install in Other Clients

For clients such as Cursor, Visual Studio Code, Gemini CLI, and OpenCode, add the server and the skills separately.

  1. Add the Fabric MCP server using the instructions for your client in Setup and Configuration.

  2. Add the skills. Clone the repository and point your client's skill loader at the skills directory, or paste the contents of a SKILL.md file into your client's instructions.

    git clone https://github.com/equinix/equinix-agent-plugins.git

    The skills are plain Markdown files in the fabric-agent-plugins/skills/ directory. Each skill has its own folder that contains a SKILL.md file and, for some skills, a references folder with supporting procedures.

Verify the Installation

Start a session and enter a request such as the following:

Show me all my Fabric connections in SV.

The client calls the Fabric MCP server and returns the connections your Equinix user can see. If it answers without calling a tool, the server is not connected. For more information, see Troubleshooting.

Other requests to try:

  • List my Fabric Cloud Routers.
  • Which of my service tokens expire in the next 30 days?
  • What Fabric Networks do I have?
  • Create a BASIC Fabric Cloud Router in Dallas.
  • Connect my SV port to AWS Direct Connect at 1 Gbps.

Update or Remove the Plugin

In Claude Code, refresh the marketplace before you update so that the client sees the latest version.

claude plugin marketplace update equinix-agent-plugins
claude plugin update equinix-fabric@equinix-agent-plugins

To remove the plugin, run the following command.

claude plugin uninstall equinix-fabric@equinix-agent-plugins

In Claude Desktop, select Sync on the marketplace entry and then Update on the plugin. To remove the plugin, select Uninstall. To remove the marketplace and every plugin from it, select Remove marketplace.

Permissions and Approvals

The plugin does not change what your Equinix account can do. The client acts as the user who logged in, and the token it holds grants the intersection of that user's roles and the permission level selected at connection time. For more information, see Permissions Model.

The following points are specific to the skills:

  • Enable your client's confirmation prompt for tool calls that create or update resources. The manage-fabric-connection, manage-fabric-network, and manage-cloud-router skills create and modify Fabric resources, and some of those resources are billed.
  • The server publishes no delete tools, so requests to delete a connection, Fabric Network, or Fabric Cloud Router resource fail. To remove a resource, use Equinix Customer Portal or the Fabric API.

Troubleshooting

For authentication, connectivity, and permission errors, see Troubleshooting in the MCP Server Overview. The following problems are specific to the plugin.

The Marketplace Fails to Sync

Problem: Your client cannot add or refresh the equinix-agent-plugins marketplace.

Solution: Confirm that your network allows access to https://github.com. Check that you entered the address exactly as https://github.com/equinix/equinix-agent-plugins. Then select Sync on the marketplace entry, or run claude plugin marketplace update equinix-agent-plugins.

The Plugin Is Installed but the Client Has No Fabric Tools

Problem: Your client recognizes the request but reports that it has no Fabric tools, or it answers from general knowledge instead of your account.

Solution: The plugin is installed but the server is not authenticated. Run /mcp in Claude Code, or go to Settings > Connectors in Claude Desktop, select equinix-fabric, and complete the browser login. Then start a new session.

The Fabric Server Appears Twice

Problem: Your client lists both fabric-mcp and equinix-fabric, or it shows each Fabric tool twice.

Solution: You added the server manually by following Setup and Configuration before you installed the plugin. The plugin adds its own copy named equinix-fabric. Remove the manual entry. In Claude Code, run claude mcp remove fabric-mcp. In other clients, delete the fabric-mcp entry from the client's MCP configuration.

Problem: You ask for your inventory and the client asks for a metro, a project, or a resource type instead of returning results.

Solution: This behavior is intentional. The show-fabric-inventory skill asks for at least one filter on an open-ended request. Add a filter, such as show me my ports in SV, or ask for everything explicitly, such as show me my full Fabric inventory.
