Permission Levels

Each tool in the following tables lists the lowest permission level required to call it. Two controls must permit a call: the roles assigned to your Equinix Customer Portal account, and the permission level you select when you connect a client. The issued token grants the intersection of the two. For more information, see Permissions Model.

LevelDescription
ViewerSearches and lookups. Makes no changes.
OperatorViewer access, plus modification of existing resources and attach or detach operations.
ManagerOperator access, plus creation of resources. Ordering a port or a Cloud Router is billed at the same rate as ordering one in the portal.

Use the narrowest permission level that covers the work. A client connected with Viewer cannot change resources, regardless of the roles assigned to the account.

The server publishes no delete tools. No permission level, including Manager, can remove a connection, port, Cloud Router, or network.

Example Prompts

The following examples show the types of requests these tools support. The client selects the tools to call. You do not need to name them.

Everyday

  • "Tell me the first five network devices I have in my inventory."
  • "Is 192.0.2.0/24 permitted in the ACL template called my_wan_acl?"
  • "Can you tell me the metros where I am able to spin up network edge devices?"

Bigger Questions

The tools can be combined, which allows an agent to complete multi-step analysis:

  • "Which devices are associated with the WAN ACL my_wan_acl? Where are they located? And what is their device type?"

For these requests, the agent reads live inventory and derives conclusions from it. Review the results before you act on them, and confirm any request that modifies a resource.
