Pricing and Billing
This topic describes key concepts about Equinix Fabric pricing and billing to make it easier to understand what you are charged on your monthly invoice.
Priced Elements
An Equinix Fabric invoice includes the following priced elements:
- Ports – Interfaces connecting physical infrastructure to Equinix Fabric switches.
- Connections – Virtual connections made locally within a Metro or globally between Metros.
Important details to consider when pricing Equinix Fabric elements:
- 1G, 10G, or 100G monthly recurring charge (MRC)
- Port pricing includes Campus Connect or Metro Connect for network platform connections.
- Minimum one-year (12 Month) term with Early Term Liability (ETL) applicable if terminated earlier.
- Customer can be in any IBX where Equinix Fabric is available.
- Fees vary depending on the selected bandwidth tier - 10Mbps, 50Mbps, 200Mbps, 500Mbps, 1Gbps, 2Gbps, 5Gbps, 10Gbps, 25Gbps, and 50Gbps.
- Only MRC | No term commitment. No ETL.
- Billing start for Equinix Virtual Connections commences when the A-side of the connection is provisioned. Example: When you're connecting to a service provider, billing for the virtual connection will begin when provisioning of the Equinix side of the connection is complete.Equinix does not wait for the provisioning of the service provider's side of the virtual connection to commence billing.
Fabric Cloud Router:
- Fees vary depending on the selected package - Lab, Basic, Standard, or Advanced
- On-Demand and 12/24/36-Month Term Lengths (exluding Lab)
- Billed as MRC
Additional Elements (if applicable):
- MRC charges
Additional charges apply when deploying an Network Edge virtual device over Equinix Fabric.
Equinix Fabric ports can be ordered online using the Equinix Customer Portal or through your Equinix Sales Representative.
Port Fee Types
- Prices for Equinix Fabric ports are determined by monthly recurring charges (MRC) that vary with the port speed and type.
- Ports are orderable for a minimum of 12 months.
- Non-recurring charges (NRC) are no longer applicable for new ports ordered from February 2023.
The following options determine port pricing.
-
Location – The region or country where the port is delivered.
-
Bandwidth speed – 1 Gbps, 10 Gbps, or 100 Gbps.
-
Port type, based on your location:
- Standard or Metro ports – The port is delivered to your Equinix account colocated in the same IBX, or to a different IBX within the same Metro as the Equinix Fabric switch.
- Remote or Metro-Remote ports – The port is delivered to a third party's demarcation in an Equinix IBX. In most cases, the third party is a Network Service Provider, who forwards connectivity to the Equinix Fabric Port on your account.
- Extended or Metro-Remote Extended ports – The port connects you to Equinix Fabric through a Building Meet-Me-Room (BMMR).
Availability of certain types of ports can vary by location, refer to your Equinix sales representative for further details.
Equinix recommends dual port architecture for network redundancy.
Port Connection Packages
Port connection package determine connection pricing model.
Standard:
- Includes only the ports and the physical network connection between your demarcation and the Equinix Fabric equipment, typically a Cross Connect, Fiber Connect or Metro Connect service.
- Charges an additional fee for a local virtual connection (VC) provisioned on a port.
- Standard port pricing does not cover Virtual Connection fees or any additional Equinix services.
Unlimited:
- Includes the ability to create local connections at no extra charge. It is available for standard and remote ports.
- Create any number of local connections up to the allowed amount of VLANs (up to 4095 VLANs).
- The Unlimited Local Connections port package includes Unlimited Local Connections and is priced higher than a standard port package.
- Unlimited Local Connections ports pricing does not cover Remote Connection (i.e. inter-metro) fees or any additional Equinix services, such as Routing Instances and IP Blocks.
- You are responsible for managing any oversubscriptions on your port.
Unlimited Port Plus:
-
Unlimited Port Plus port package is available for offline ordering in Europe, US, and Canada.
-
Unlimited Port Plus package is applicable to standard ports only.
-
Remote Connections originating from these ports within the following geographic limits are not charged:

- Unlimited Port Plus in Canada and US – Connections across all metros in Canada & US.
- Includes the ability to create local and remote connections at no extra charge. It is available for standard ports.
- Create any number of local and remote connections up to the allowed amount of VLANs (up to 4095 VLANs).
- Unlimited Port Plus connections package does not cover any additional Equinix services, such as Routing Instances and IP Blocks.
- You are responsible for managing any oversubscriptions on your port.
Virtual Connections
This topic covers pricing and billing for Virtual Connections (VCs).
Customers have access to two types of virtual connections via Equinix Fabric:
-
Point-to-Point VCs – Allow users to set up direct connections between assets in individual locations either within the same metro or across different metros.
-
E-LAN Multipoint-to-Multipoint VCs – Enable users to interconnect their data center assets across many locations through a common network instead of requiring direct connections between individual locations.
Pricing models for each of these interconnection alternatives vary as described below. Billing terms remain the same for both.
Pricing for Point-to-Point VCs
Location and bandwidth choice are the two main factors that determine pricing for your Equinix Fabric VCs.
Location:
Location is determined by a specific region or country of both the A and Z sides of a connection.
-
Local Connections – You can connect to other Equinix Fabric users anywhere within the same metro.
-
Remote Connections – You can connect to other Equinix Fabric users in different metros globally that are in the same region or in a different region.
Bandwidth:
Bandwidth availability and speed choice are dependent upon your service provider, and custom speeds are available based on the connection destination.
The following bandwidth choices are supported by Equinix:
- Up to 10 Mbps
- From 10 Mbps to 50 Mbps
- From 50 Mbps to 200 Mbps
- From 200 Mbps to 500 Mbps
- From 500 Mbps to 1 Gbps
- From 1 Gbps to 2 Gbps
- From 2 Gbps to 5 Gbps
- From 5 Gbps to 10 Gbps
- From 10 Gbps to 25 Gbps
- From 25 Gbps to 50 Gbps
Customers pay a flat monthly fee for bandwidth capacity provisioned regardless of the bandwidth amount consumed during the month.
Pricing for E-LAN Multipoint-to-Multipoint VCs
Network Type (Local, Regional or Global) and bandwidth choice are the two main factors that determine pricing for E-LAN Multipoint-to-Multipoint VCs.
Network Type
Location is determined by a specific metro, region or country of both the A and Z sides of a connection.
- Local Network – You can connect your assets within a specific metro.
- Regional Network – You can connect your assets across metros located in the same region (within AMER, APAC, or EMEA).
- Global Network – You can connect their assets across metros located in different regions (AMER, APAC, and EMEA)
Bandwidth
Multipoint-to-Multipoint VCs support the same bandwidth tiers as Point-to-Point VCs:
- Up to 10 Mbps
- From 10 Mbps to 50 Mbps
- From 50 Mbps to 200 Mbps
- From 200 Mbps to 500 Mbps
- From 500 Mbps to 1 Gbps
- From 1 Gbps to 2 Gbps
- From 2 Gbps to 5 Gbps
- From 5 Gbps to 10 Gbps
- From 10 Gbps to 25 Gbps
- From 25 Gbps to 50 Gbps (applicable to local and regional networks)
The first step in setting up an E-LAN Multipoint-to-Multipoint connectivity option is to create your private network at no additional charge. Then, you can add connections to that network from each of your metros or endpoints.
Contracted Terms
When ordering connections between two different metros, you can select the on-demand option to pay-as-you-go with no minimum term obligation, or select a 12, 24, or 36-month term, billed monthly.
Term commitments provide you with discounted pricing and predictable spending for the duration of the term with longer commitments receiving a higher discount percentage compared to shorter terms.
Fabric Cloud Router and all Fabric Port-to-Port and Port-to-Network connections except for Local Connections, are currently eligible for terms ordering through the Fabric portal.
Virtual Connection Billing
Billing for all types of VCs involves these considerations:
-
Minimum billable time interval is one day (24 hours). The billed day begins at 12:00 AM (00:00) and ends at 11:59 PM (23:59), with A-side location determining the time zone.
ExampleYou provision a 1 Gbps connection on May 15 at 9 PM and keep it active through the end of the month. 9 PM to 11:59 PM on May 15 would be measured as day 1 plus the remaining 16 full days until the end of the month (total of 17 days). If the equivalent daily price for a 1 Gbps connection is $20/day, your prorated charge for the VC in May would be $20 x 17 = $272.
-
If you change your connection’s bandwidth you will be charged based on the updated bandwidth rate for the billed day.
Examples: You have a 200 Mbps connection and you upgrade it to 1 Gbps. For the day you upgrade the bandwidth, you will be charged based on the 1 Gbps bandwidth rate. OR You have a 1 Gbps connection and you downgrade it to 200 Mbps. For the day you change the bandwidth, you will be charged based on the 200 Mbps bandwidth rate.
-
Invoices include a single line for every active connection (local or remote for Point-to-Point, or Local, Regional or Global for E-LAN Multipoint-to-Multipoint).
-
Only A-side billing applies. No charge applies for the Z-side. This means that only the subscriber pays for the Fabric connection.
-
Billing for VCs starts on the day that the connection is provisioned on the Equinix side. In the case of connections to service providers, we don't wait for them to complete provisioning before we start billing.
-
Billing for VCs ends on the day that the connection is deprovisioned in Equinix Fabric.
-
Virtual Connections can be canceled at any time, and are not tied to an Equinix Fabric annual contract.
-
For terminations, no credit is issued because the customer is not billed for the entire month, that is, for any prorated amount after the termination date.
In cases where redundant VCs are required for resilience or any other reason, customers are billed for both the primary and secondary connections.
Additional Pricing Elements
The Equinix Fabric Layer 3 services pricing model is based on monthly recurring charge (MRC) fees charged for the following components:
- Fabric Cloud Router - A virtual routing service that enables private layer 3 connectivity between public clouds, colocation and other Equinix services.
- IP block - A block of IP addresses required for layer 3 connectivity.
