IP Allocation

Equinix can provide IP addresses for your Equinix Internet Access service. The available IP assignments supported by Equinix Internet Access are:

  • Provider Independent (PI)

    Note: All customers globally must register their IP addresses with the appropriate agency, for example, RADB or the Regional Internet Registry:

    • RADB for services in AMER

    • RIPE for services in EMEA

    • APNIC for services in APAC

  • Provider Assigned (PA)

Note: You cannot mix PI and PA addresses on the same service.

The available IP address types are:

  • IPv6

Provider-independent IP Space

Provider-independent (PI) IP addresses allow you to bring your own publicly routable IP addresses that are assigned to your organization. Equinix Internet Access broadcasts those addresses to the internet.

Note: PI space is obtained through your local Regional Internet Registry (RIR), such as ARIN in North America and RIPE in Europe.

After registering a PI subnet in the Internet Registry, you must wait 24 hours before attempting to create an Internet Access service. Approximately 24 hours are required to propagate information from the Registry to Equinix.

You can request IP resources directly from these providers:

  • ARIN – American Registry for Internet Numbers, www.arin.net
  • RIPE – Réseaux IP Européens Network Coordination Centre, www.ripe.net
  • APNIC – Asia-Pacific Network Information Centre, www.apnic.net
  • LACNIC – Latin America and Caribbean Network Information Centre, www.lacnic.net

Note: You can also request IP resources from third parties and announce any space you legitimately own.

The Internet Access service can be used with the provider-independent and legacy IP address spaces with a minimum prefix size of /24 IPv4 or /48 IPv6. However, to ensure global reachability, customers must have one or more suitable route objects which exactly match their planned prefix announcements, and should have valid RPKI Route Origin Authorizations (ROAs) in place.

Equinix cannot create RPKI ROAs for customer-provided IP ranges. These values must be created through the Regional or National Internet Registry where the prefix is currently registered. We recommend that customers host their route objects with the same RIR/NIR to avoid impact as the industry moves away from third-party routing registries.

Internet Access supports announcing customer-provided IPs from a private ASN, subject to customer creation of valid route objects and RPKI ROAs with Equinix 15830 as the origin. However, use of a public ASN is only supported on dedicated ports at this time.

Provider-assigned IP Space

You can purchase IPv4 and IPv6 addresses for your LAN subnet. This provider-assigned (PA) space is non-portable and isn't announced through other providers unless connectivity is available to the Equinix-aggregated announcement.

Note: Initial Equinix assignments enable service interconnection between you and Equinix. You can't keep the address space after leaving the Equinix Internet Access transit platform.

In every region, Equinix seeks to maintain a sufficient supply of PA IPv4 and IPv6 IP space to fulfill your requests for additional IP allocations.

Note: Any additional IP addresses are returned to Equinix upon termination of service.

The following addresses are available through the Equinix Internet Access – Additional IP Allocation product offering:

  • IPv4 – /30, /29, /28, /27, /26, /25, /24

  • IPv6 – /64, /48

These addresses can be purchased as IPv4 only, IPv6 only, or as a dual stack where IPv4 and IPv6 are combined.

Important: Contact your Equinix representative for any regional differences. When you discontinue the services, these addresses are returned to the Equinix pool of addresses.
