Managed Private Cloud
Managed Private Cloud (MPC) is an Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) platform delivered by Equinix Managed Solutions.
With MPC, the Customer can purchase computing resources hosted in an Equinix data center (IBX) to enable Multi- and Hybrid Cloud solutions. Combined with Equinix Fabric® MPC can be connected to the Customer environment (On-Prem, Colo) as well as other Cloud- and SaaS Service Providers such as AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, Oracle Cloud, Salesforce, SAP and more.
MPC consists of compute, storage and networking resources, managed from the MPC Operational Console. In this portal the customer can create and manage Virtual Machines with Compute and Storage resources and configure virtual networks and security policies.
MPC is available in a selected number of IBXs globally, enabling geographic advantages for the Customer’s applications and systems.

Service Descriptions
MPC is available in 3 service variants.
-
MPC FLEX for optimal scalability.
-
MPC Single Tenant for maximum robustness and security.
-
MPC Core (Single Tenant, VMware Cloud Foundation for dedicated infrastructure with full-stack control.
MPC Core (Single Tenant, VMware Cloud Foundation)
MPC Core is a dedicated, VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF)-based option for customers who need full-stack control within a managed environment. It provides the following:
- Dedicated Secure Cabinet Express in an Equinix IBX.
- VMware Cloud Foundation blueprint with NSX networking and vSAN storage.
- Flexible connectivity via Equinix Fabric, Cloud Router, Network Edge, Cross Connect and Metro Connect.
- Optional NSX Gateway Firewall and Distributed Firewall features.
- Scale options to add hosts, clusters (up to 5), or new VCF instances.
Architecture & Blueprints
- Based on VMware VCF blueprint: Fleet in a Single Site with minimal footprint.
- Management domain and customer workloads share a single cluster with separate resource pools.
- Installed components include: VCF Installer, Fleet Management, Operations, vCenter, NSX Managers/Edges, Identity Broker, HCX (for migration), and core management services (AD DS, DNS, CA, NTP).
Physical Delivery
- Delivered in a dedicated Secure Cabinet Express; Equinix manages cabinet, power, and access.
- Each cabinet includes two redundant switches (48 × 25Gbps ports); inter-cabinet bandwidth up to 400Gbps.
- Management firewalls and out-of-band access included.
Cluster & Host Types
- Minimum cluster of 4 hosts: (3 usable + 1 spare, N+1 principle).
- Clusters with more than 15 hosts require a second spare (N+2).
- Host catalog includes options from 16C/512GB RAM to 64C/2048GB RAM with NVMe storage.
- Plan for ≤80% average CPU/RAM utilization; subtract VCF overhead for management components.
Storage
- Based on vSAN with encryption at rest and in transit.
- RAID policy depends on cluster size (RAID-5 or RAID-6).
- Maintain sufficient free capacity for maintenance.
Licensing
- Choose Equinix-provided VCF licenses or Bring Your Own License (BYOL) from Broadcom/VMware.
- BYOL requires compliance reporting to Broadcom.
Connectivity & Routing
- Supports Layer-2 and Layer-3 connectivity:
- Layer-3 (BGP) via Equinix Fabric, Cloud Router, Network Edge
- Layer-2 via Infrastructure Port, Cross Connect, Metro Connect
- Routing options:
- Equinix-routed: NSX Edge deployed in HA; includes basic network functions and stateless firewall.
- Customer-routed: Customer appliance terminates L3; NSX components remain mandatory.
NSX Networking Options
- Edges
- Medium: 4 vCPU, 16GB RAM, ~2Gbps
- Large: 8 vCPU, 16GB RAM, ~10Gbps
- X-Large: 16 vCPU, 32GB RAM, adds L7 features
- Gateway Firewall: Stateful firewall with IDS/IPS and malware prevention (licensed per Edge size).
- Distributed Firewall (DFW): Micro-segmentation for east-west traffic (licensed per CPU core).
Access & Permissions
- Interfaces: VCF Operations, vCenter, NSX, HCX (migration).
- Identity Broker integrates with customer AD via secure LDAP.
- Permission tiers: Restricted, Limited, Free.
Application Integrations
Supports backup (Veeam, Commvault, Rubrik), DR (Zerto), VDI (Omnissa, Citrix), and automation tools (Terraform, Ansible).
Scaling
- Add hosts to existing cluster.
- Add clusters (up to 5 per instance).
- Add new VCF instance within Fleet for stronger isolation.
Service Options
- Backup & Restore: via Managed Private Backup (ordered separately).
- Software Licensing: Catalog of ISOs; BYOL supported.
- Premier Support Plan: Prepaid support hours (monthly or annual).
