Service Description - MPB
Service Options
Managed Private Backup offers one service variant in release 1.0, called Flex.
MPB Flex
By ordering the Flex service variant, you gain access to our standard platform (managed by Equinix), with daily backup jobs executed at pre-scheduled times (outside business hours).
This option covers all the features below:
-
Access to operational console, allowing you to discover resources requiring protection and assigning backup policies, execute on-demand backups and restores
-
Protection for physical servers and virtual machines
-
Protection for databases
-
Access to the MPB product page, including online documentation
-
Backup platform managed by us
Protected Resources
After choosing the variant, you will choose between types of data (Protected Resources) that need protection.
The available Protected Resources are:
-
Volume (when protecting File System, Database, and image level targets), measured by front end terabytes.
Retention and offsite protection option combinations
You may select different combinations of retention and offsite protection options for each protected resource. Once ordered, this policy is available for use on the operational console.
Retention options define how long backup data will be stored on the source IBX (location), while Offsite options define how long backup data is stored at an alternative IBX (location).
You can order the following option combinations on Flex:

Service Demarcation
We are solely responsible for the managed backup platform (operational console, backup servers, and storage components).
You are fully responsible for defining which data should be protected by each backup policy.
You are responsible for installing backup agents, discovering instances, and assigning backup policies to them.
You are also responsible for identifying and correcting failed backup jobs, except when the failure was caused by an MPB service/component unavailability.
We are not responsible for any client software or Internet connectivity needed to manage or use the Service.
The default scheduling for backup jobs is set to the IBX time zone. Therefore, if you have ordered the Managed Private Backup (MPB) in two different IBXs across various time zones, the start times for each job will differ.
You are responsible for providing enough compute and network resources to allow backups to run on specified timing. As a guide, your instances should have at least 10% of free processing time and memory capacity plus 1 GB of free disk space to allow regular backup operation during backup window.
Service Limitations
The Managed Private Backup service 1.0 release can only be ordered in combination with Managed Private Cloud, and as such, act as the protection component in a solution.
Managed Private Backup service offers immutability protection by default in the Offsite Protection location. If you do not order offsite protection, this feature will not be part of the service delivery.
You will be allowed to exceed the ordered baseline by 25% while paying for Overage charges (for example, if you have a baseline of 10 TB, you can use up to 12.5 TB). If you exceed the baseline that you ordered, the service may be disrupted until you update the baseline.
You can only protect data at the location (IBX) where you have ordered the Managed Private Backup service.
The following Operating Systems, Databases, and virtualization technology are supported. The support is limited to current versions and previous versions still supported by the original vendors on their regular lifecycle (extended support does not apply).
Vendor | Name |
---|---|
Microsoft |
Windows Server |
RedHat |
Enterprise Linux |
Suse |
Linux Enterprise Server |
Ubuntu |
Server |
Debian |
Stable |
CentOS |
Stream |
Microsoft |
SQL Server |
Oracle |
Database |
VMware |
vSphere |
VMware |
vCloud Director |
Microsoft |
Hyper-V |
When vendors launch new versions, it may take some time for the new version to be supported by the backup technology vendor and, therefore, by the Managed Private Backup service.
Due to technology restrictions on virtualized environments, instances with vHBA devices cannot be protected by image-level backup (only agent-level backups can be used).
Purchase Units
Service Options
When ordering the Managed Private Backup service, you need to choose the service variant that is most suitable to your requirements. Check previous pages for explanations of each one.
The table below shows purchase units for each variant available and the applicable fees:
MPB Flex
Protected Resource | Purchase Unit | Installation Fee | MRC | Overage |
---|---|---|---|---|
Volume |
TB |
No |
Yes |
Yes |
As you can see, no Installation Fees apply for Flex service options.
Quantity (of data) to protect
Lastly, you will need to specify the amount of data you want to protect.
The Managed Private Backup service is billed per front-end terabyte protected. This makes it easier for you to identify how much of the product is needed to cover your data.
This configuration allows you to protect up to the baseline purchased. If your front-end data grows above the purchased amount, the backup will not be disrupted. Instead, an overage charge will be generated based on the overage price defined in the quote.
Overage Charges
As mentioned above, if you exceed the front-end TB protection ordered, an overage charge will be generated based on the overage price defined in the quote.
Example: You have ordered 100 TB of front-end data protection. The table below shows a measure of how much data you have protected (measured by the largest backup size of each day in the month):
Day of the month | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | ... | 29 | 30 |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Usage |
70 TB |
75 TB |
85 TB |
105 TB |
110 TB |
90 TB |
... |
98 TB |
98 TB |
In this case, you exceeded the subscribed limit between days 4 and 5, and after these two days, you probably deleted some information.
During the period (month), the largest full backup size was 110 TB, and since you have a baseline ordered of 100 TB, it will be generated an 10 TB overage charge for this period.

Service Requests
Service Requests are used to report an issue with the service or when we need to implement or assist with implementing a change.
You can raise a Service Request for configuration changes that cannot be implemented through Self Service in the Operational Console, or if you require assistance with implementing changes via the Operational Console.
We offer 24x7x365 support for the Managed Private Backup Service.
There are two types of service requests available:
-
INCLUDED: Service Requests that are in scope of the Service (no additional charges apply)
-
ADDITIONAL: Service Requests that are out of scope of the Service (additional charges apply)
We offer guidance for all Service Requests that can be executed through self-serve, meaning we will provide procedural instruction and oversee the customer’s execution of the task.
Type of Change | Self-service | Type |

You can select changes which are not listed in the table above by selecting “change” at the service request module in the Managed Services Portal. Equinix will perform an impact analysis to determine whether the change can be implemented, to determine associated costs and lead time.
Any charges related to Service Requests will be deducted from your Premier Support Plan Balance (See the Service Description for Premier Support for more details), or in case of insufficient balance invoiced in arrears based on the prevailing rate.
For the avoidance of doubt any changes in the baseline capacity, amount ordered or any other change that will have an impact on the monthly service fee should be requested via the Sales team.
Reporting
Functional Reporting
The operational console of the Managed Private Backup service is very complete and provides a lot of information regarding the service delivery.
The left menu displays links to:
-
Dashboard: containing overall information about the backup health
-
Protection targets: items that can be configured for protection, such as virtualization platforms, databases, file servers, etc.
-
Jobs: backup and restore listing, execution history, and scheduling
-
Reports: displays detailed information about the customer's product configuration
SLA Reporting
On the Managed Private Backup Service 1.0 Release, customers may ask for SLA reporting via a Service Request at any time without incurring additional charges.
SLA
The Managed Private Backup service SLA is:
Service Option | Availability |
---|---|
Managed Private Backup - Flex |
99.95% |
See Managed Services product policies on how we calculate SLAs and what exclusions are applicable.
